Hyundai and Kia achieve record US sales amid hybrid surge
Hyundai Motor Group has achieved record-breaking sales performance in the United States, driven largely by a surge in hybrid vehicle demand. In September, the combined sales of Hyundai and Kia reached 154,448 units, marking their highest September on record. For the third quarter, combined sales hit 483,555 units, a 5.3% increase from the previous year.
This growth has allowed the group to climb the competitive ranks in the US market. In July and August, Hyundai and Kia surpassed Ford to secure the third position in monthly market share, trailing only General Motors and Toyota. In August, the group reached a record-high market share of 12.9%.
The shift toward hybrid models has been a critical factor. While electric vehicle sales saw declines, hybrid sales for the two brands exceeded 50,000 units in August alone. This trend is supported by recent regulatory shifts; the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) finalized new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that are less stringent than previously anticipated. These new regulations, which set a 2031 industry average of approximately 34.9 mpg, are expected to reduce the technology cost burden for Hyundai and Kia by a combined estimated $7.4 billion between 2027 and 2031.
