Hyundai and Kia unveil xEV and AI strategies at Aachen Colloquium
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia presented their future mobility and electrification strategies at the Aachen Colloquium 2026 in Germany. For the first time since the event's inception in 1987, a representative from the companies delivered the keynote address.
Manfred Harer, President and Head of R&D, introduced the ‘xEV strategy,’ which emphasizes a multi-pathway approach. Rather than focusing on a single power source, the strategy integrates electric vehicles (EV), hybrids (HEV), extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEV) to meet diverse market demands.
The companies also highlighted the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in vehicle development. Harer described AI as a tool to enhance the analytical capabilities and creativity of engineers rather than a replacement for them. This includes utilizing digital twins, virtual verification, and a ‘data flywheel’ system to continuously improve vehicle performance through software updates and user data.
Exhibits at the event included hydrogen-related technologies such as PEM water electrolysis stacks, hydrogen storage tanks, and fuel cell systems used in the Nexo. Electrification components, including battery packs, cells, and next-generation hybrid transmissions, were also showcased.
