Hyundai Engineering & Construction signs SMR agreement with FANCO
Hyundai Engineering & Construction has signed a Master Services Agreement (MSA) with First American Nuclear (FANCO), a US-based developer of next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs). The five-year agreement focuses on the EAGL-1 project, which utilizes a liquid metal fast reactor (LMFR) design employing a lead and bismuth alloy as a coolant.
Under the terms of the MSA, Hyundai E&C will provide technical advisory services in design and engineering, conduct constructability reviews, and offer technical feedback regarding construction. By participating from the early design stages, the company aims to integrate its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) expertise to increase the likelihood of future involvement in the actual construction of the reactors.
The EAGL-1 project features a modular design with a single reactor output of approximately 240MWe, allowing for cluster-based deployment to meet growing power demands. FANCO is also promoting a “BRIDGE POWER” solution, which uses existing power sources to meet initial demand before transitioning to nuclear power, a model intended for large-scale data centers and industrial complexes. FANCO has submitted a regulatory consultation plan to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to advance the commercialization of the technology.
