Hyundai finalizes full takeover of Boston Dynamics
Hyundai Motor Group completed the acquisition of the remaining 9.65% stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank for $325 million, giving it 100% ownership of the U.S. robotics firm. The purchase ends a deal that began with an 80% stake bought in 2021 and consolidates Hyundai’s control over Boston Dynamics’ direction, capital spending and commercialization.
The integration aims to move Boston Dynamics’ robots, especially the humanoid Atlas, from research demonstrations to industrial use. Hyundai plans to introduce Atlas into its automotive factories from 2028 for parts sequencing, logistics and eventually complex assembly tasks, while continuing to employ Spot robots for line inspections and defect detection. The commercial Atlas was unveiled at CES 2026, marking a shift toward real‑world factory applications. Hyundai also highlighted a deployment of customized Spot units at FIFA World Cup 2026 venues, underscoring its strategy to embed robotics in large‑scale operations.
By fully owning Boston Dynamics, Hyundai seeks to combine its vehicle and logistics expertise with advanced automation, positioning itself as a leader in the next phase of industrial robotics.
