Hyundai Ioniq 9 electric SUVs undergo National Highways trials

Hyundai Motor UK has provided four electric Ioniq 9 SUVs to National Highways for operational trials on England’s motorways and major A-roads. The assessment aims to determine the suitability of the electric vehicle for frontline traffic officer duties, focusing on its range, rapid charging capabilities, and ability to integrate essential emergency equipment.

The vehicles were converted by Richell Vehicle Conversions (RVC) to include high-visibility decals, emergency lighting, and specialized on-board equipment. This includes a dedicated 240Ah lithium auxiliary battery system to power a lightbar, a 100W siren, and various LED warning lights, ensuring the emergency suite remains functional without draining the main vehicle battery. The conversion also features a bespoke system for housing radios, telematics, and CCTV equipment.

The Ioniq 9 features a 110.3kWh battery with a WLTP range of up to 385 miles and supports ultra-rapid charging via its 800V architecture. If the trials are successful, National Highways is considering further purchases in 2026 to support zero-emission operations.
