Hyundai Motor and Kia stocks decline amid market competition and robotics concerns

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia are facing significant downward pressure on their stock prices, with the KRX automotive index dropping 12.55% over the past month. Hyundai's shares have fallen sharply, losing more than half their value from previous highs.

Analysts attribute this decline to several factors, including a strengthening won, high interest rates, and intensifying competition in key markets such as South Korea, the United States, and India. Additionally, concerns regarding potential production disruptions due to third-quarter strikes and lowered earnings forecasts for 2024 and 2025 have contributed to the bearish sentiment.

Investor enthusiasm for the group's robotics division has also cooled. Reports suggest that an initial public offering (IPO) for Boston Dynamics may be difficult by 2027 due to ongoing losses and the delayed large-scale deployment of the Atlas humanoid robot. While the group maintains long-term strategic partnerships with companies like Google and Nvidia for AI and robotics development, the lack of immediate momentum has dampened short-term expectations. Consequently, multiple securities firms, including NH Investment & Securities and Samsung Securities, have lowered their target prices for Hyundai Motor.
