Hyundai Motor and Kia to test Level 4 autonomous logistics trucks

Hyundai Motor and Kia have entered into a business agreement to conduct Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty truck logistics demonstrations. The initiative aims to verify technical reliability and operational stability within real-world logistics environments to prepare for future commercialization.

As part of the project, Hyundai Motor and Kia will develop two demonstration vehicles—one Xcient hydrogen electric truck and one standard Xcient—to be provided in early 2025. These vehicles will feature customized controllers and interfaces for autonomous system integration. The testing phase, scheduled to run through the end of next year, will involve two distinct environments: a 100km mixed highway and urban route, and a 400km long-distance highway route.

The collaboration includes Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Glovis, which will support operations using existing logistics routes, while autonomous software companies Mars Auto and RideFlux will apply specialized autonomous driving systems to the vehicles. The data collected will be used to advance vehicle control and safety redundancy technologies, ensuring stability during long-distance and nighttime operations.
