Hyundai Mobis unveils smart manufacturing tech as Hyundai Group pivots to AI
Hyundai Mobis recently held its second M-Sphere exhibition at the Quantum Center in Uiwang, showcasing approximately 40 new manufacturing technologies. The technologies, categorized into intelligent automation, AI digital twins, and enabling technologies, focus on enhancing smart manufacturing through AI and robotics. Key demonstrations included a 3D vision-equipped transport robot and a physical AI-based robot teaching solution that allows for rapid retraining of robotic systems within two to four hours.
In a broader strategic shift, Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to transition into a technology and physical AI company. The group aims to launch its first mass-produced software-defined vehicle (SDV) in 2028, featuring L2+ autonomous driving technology and the proprietary 'Atria AI' model.
Meanwhile, in the autonomous vehicle sector, Waymo has released findings from its 200 million miles of driverless driving. Waymo argues that achieving full autonomy requires a multi-sensor approach—combining cameras, lidar, and radar—rather than relying solely on vision-based systems. This stance contrasts with Tesla's vision-only strategy. Additionally, reports from OSHA indicate that the rapid scaling of robotaxi services has led to over two dozen injuries among Waymo and Zoox test drivers in 2024 and 2025, often caused by abrupt braking or sudden vehicle maneuvers.
