Hyundai Motor Group’s Atlas robot debut at 2026 World Cup triggers sharp stock swing

Hyundai Motor Group showcased Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot Atlas during the halftime of the Brazil‑Norway round‑of‑16 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in New York‑New Jersey, marking the first appearance of a robot at a World Cup event. The robot delivered the match ball to the referee and performed a goal‑celebration routine, underscoring Hyundai’s 27‑year partnership with FIFA that includes the supply of over 8,900 official vehicles across seven tournaments.

The high‑profile display sparked a surge in investor enthusiasm, lifting Hyundai shares to a peak of about 780,000 KRW in early June. Within two months, the stock fell to roughly 390,000 KRW – a decline of about 50% – as analysts forecast weaker second‑quarter earnings, cite ongoing union strikes and a shift of market capital toward semiconductors. Despite the drop, analysts note that upcoming vehicle launches and continued robotics initiatives could support a rebound in the latter half of the year.
