Hyundai Nexo captures 11% of Japan's hydrogen vehicle market

Hyundai Motor Company has achieved an 11% market share in the Japanese passenger hydrogen electric vehicle (FCEV) market following the launch of the new Nexo. Between April and August, the company recorded 20 new registrations, with total sales reaching 35 units including those pending delivery.

A significant portion of these sales is directed toward the commercial transport sector. Specifically, 22 units have been or are scheduled to be supplied to taxi operators in the Tokyo and Aichi regions. Hyundai is leveraging the Nexo’s high driving range—certified at 1,014 km under WLTC standards—and its Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) capabilities to appeal to taxi fleets that require durability and reduced charging frequency.

The expansion is supported by Japanese government and local municipality policies. Tokyo aims to deploy 600 hydrogen taxis by 2030, while Aichi Prefecture targets 250 taxis by the same year, offering substantial purchase and fuel subsidies to encourage the adoption of hydrogen mobility in commercial vehicles.
