Hyundai Rotem signs MOU for hydrogen tram project in Egypt
Hyundai Rotem has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to cooperate on establishing a hydrogen electric tram system for Egypt’s New Administrative Capital.
The project is currently in the preliminary feasibility study stage. If implemented, Hyundai Rotem plans to provide a comprehensive solution including vehicle supply, operation, systems, and maintenance. The proposed plan involves introducing 44 tram sets across a 28km route in the smart city, which is being constructed approximately 35km east of Cairo to accommodate over 6 million residents.
This agreement marks Hyundai Rotem’s first step toward exporting hydrogen electric trams internationally. The company intends to leverage Hyundai Motor Group’s ‘HTWO’ hydrogen business platform to offer integrated solutions. These trams are designed to be 100% wire-free, using hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, which eliminates the need for overhead power lines and reduces carbon emissions by emitting only water.
