Hyundai Motor Group to acquire SoftBank's remaining stake in Boston Dynamics for $325 million
Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to purchase SoftBank Group’s remaining 9.65% ownership in Boston Dynamics for $325 million, completing a full takeover of the U.S. robotics firm. The deal, expected to receive board approval on 22 June, will give Hyundai 100% control of the company that created the Atlas humanoid and the Spot robot dog. Hyundai aims to integrate Atlas into its vehicle factories, with commercial production slated to start at its electric‑vehicle plant near Savannah, Georgia, by 2028 and a target output of 30,000 units a year. The acquisition follows Hyundai’s 2021 purchase of an 80% stake for $880 million; the new price values Boston Dynamics at roughly $3.4 billion. Full ownership removes SoftBank as a minority shareholder and allows Hyundai to develop a vertically integrated robotics capability to compete with Tesla’s Optimus and emerging Chinese rivals. The transaction underscores Hyundai’s strategy to use advanced robotics for assembly‑line automation and to secure key IP within a Western‑aligned supply chain.
