HZJZ reports PFAS contamination in Lika-Senj County well
The Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) has reported that PFAS compounds were detected in a well located near an illegal waste landfill in the Lika-Senj County. This finding follows two previous testing cycles where the same contamination was identified in the same well.
Testing conducted between September 15 and October 20, 2026, involved 24 locations, including rainwater tanks, wells, and springs. While PFAS was found in one well, it was not detected in the other three samples tested for these compounds. HZJZ stated that the contamination appears to be local to the immediate vicinity of the illegal landfill and that the affected well is not used for drinking water.
In a separate finding, microbiological irregularities were identified in 23 out of the 24 samples tested. One sample also showed elevated physical-chemical indicators. HZJZ emphasized that public water supply systems in Lika-Senj County, as well as the islands of Pag and Rab, remain health-compliant and show no signs of impact from the landfill contamination.
