I-95 express lanes in Virginia may expand to two-way travel

The Virginia Department of Transportation is studying a proposal to transform the I-95 express lanes into a permanent two-way system. Currently, these lanes only operate in one direction depending on the time of day: inbound toward the city in the morning and outbound in the afternoon. The potential plan could also extend the express lanes further south, beyond Fredericksburg.

Proposed changes include a new two-lane connector at the Mixing Bowl, three lanes in each direction between Franconia-Springfield Parkway and Prince William Parkway, and two lanes in each direction from Prince William Parkway to U.S. Route 17. Further extensions could reach Spotsylvania Parkway.

In a related development, construction continues on the I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project. This includes a scheduled traffic shift at the Route 123 interchange in Woodbridge to facilitate the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge over Occoquan Road. This specific traffic shift is expected to remain in place until summer 2027, with the full interchange project slated for completion in late 2028.
