I Love Lucy to receive inaugural Television Academy Legacy Award
The Television Academy has named the landmark sitcom ‘I Love Lucy’ as the first recipient of its inaugural Legacy Award. The new honor is designed to recognize television programs that have made a profound, generational impact on audiences and remain culturally and industrially relevant.
A special tribute to the series will be held during the second night of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 6. The show, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, was selected by the Academy’s Board of Governors from candidates recommended by its Special Awards Committee.
Co-created by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, ‘I Love Lucy’ aired on CBS from 1951 to 1957 and was a massive ratings success. The production is credited with pioneering the three-camera filming format in front of a live studio audience. Ball and Arnaz also famously secured creative control by accepting lower salaries in exchange for ownership of the show’s negatives, a move that helped establish modern television business models.
