IACHR announces five finalists for Freedom of Expression Rapporteur

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has announced five finalists for the position of Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE). The candidates will undergo interviews on October 15 and 19, with a final decision expected by October 26. The selected individual will assume the role on December 1, 2026, succeeding Colombian Pedro Vaca Villarreal.

The five finalists are: - Alejandra Negrete Morayta (Mexico) - Raissa Carrillo Villamizar (Colombia) - Carlos Correa Barros (Venezuela) - Viviana Giacaman Sarah (Chile) - Mauricio Herrera Ulloa (Costa Rica)

The selection process follows the regulations of the Organization of American States (OAS) and included a public consultation period from July 27 to August 27, which received 258 letters and observations from member states and civil society. The RELE is based in Washington, D.C., and is tasked with promoting freedom of expression throughout the hemisphere.
