IACHR orders protection for Nicaraguan exiles in Costa Rica

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has issued precautionary measures to protect ten Nicaraguan exiles living in Costa Rica. The commission cited a situation of gravity and urgency, noting that these individuals face risks to their lives and physical integrity due to alleged transnational repression by the Ortega-Murillo administration.

Protected individuals include journalist Aníbal Enrique Toruño Jirón and his family, journalists Hanssel Manuel Vásquez Ruiz and Tania Jeanneth López Rodríguez, environmentalist Amaru Ruiz Alemán, and political analyst Eliseo Fabio Núñez Morales with his family.

In a separate but related development, eighteen Nicaraguan exile organizations have petitioned Costa Rica’s Migratory Administrative Tribunal to prevent the deportation of Carlos Calero Hurtado. Activists argue that Calero, a peasant opposition figure, faces arbitrary detention, torture, and forced disappearance if returned to Nicaragua. The groups are invoking the principle of non-refoulement to protect him from the current regime.
