IAEA reports critical gaps in Iran nuclear monitoring and restores power to Zaporizhzhya

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has issued several urgent warnings regarding global nuclear security. He reported that the agency has lost continuity of knowledge over Iran’s enriched uranium stocks, specifically those enriched to 60 percent, for more than a year following military strikes in June 2025. The agency currently lacks access to key facilities, including the Isfahan plant, and reports no engagement from Tehran regarding nuclear material updates.

In Ukraine, a localized ceasefire facilitated by the IAEA allowed for the restoration of external power to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. This follows a nearly three-week interruption that had forced the facility to rely on emergency diesel generators. The restoration of the Ferrosplavnaya-1 power line is considered a critical step for maintaining reactor cooling and overall plant safety.

Additionally, Grossi noted progress in Syria, where increased transparency and access to sites like Dair Alzour have allowed the IAEA to clarify past activities. Conversely, the agency expressed serious concern regarding North Korea’s continued expansion of nuclear material production at facilities such as Yongbyon. Finally, South Korea has formally notified the IAEA of its intent to consult on safeguards arrangements for future nuclear-powered submarines.
