IAEA Chief Urges Iran to Restore Nuclear Inspector Access
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has called on Iran to provide the necessary information and access to verify previously declared nuclear material. Addressing the UN Security Council, Grossi highlighted particular concern regarding 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium that has remained unverified for more than five years.
Grossi noted that while inspectors had been available to return for several months, they have yet to receive the access required to resume verification at several Iranian nuclear facilities. This follows the IAEA's withdrawal of all inspectors from Iran by the end of June 2025 due to safety concerns following military attacks. Currently, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is the only site where IAEA inspectors are conducting verification activities.
The United Kingdom has also joined calls for Iran to allow inspectors to return to all nuclear sites to restore international confidence. UK Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, stated that the IAEA Board of Governors referred Iran to the Security Council in June 2025 after determining the country failed to meet its nuclear safeguards obligations. This marks the first such referral in two decades. MacIntosh further noted that Iran has accumulated over 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, a level she argued lacks credible civilian justification.
