Syria nuclear program: IAEA lifts non-compliance status

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has officially lifted the non-compliance status for Syria after the country met technical and legal requirements. This decision follows a period of cooperation from the current Syrian administration, which provided access to previously undisclosed sites.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi revealed that a nuclear reactor built during the Bashar al-Assad era in Deir ez-Zor was designed to be highly efficient in producing fissile material for nuclear weapons. The facility was nearly complete when it was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2007. Inspectors noted that the reactor's cooling infrastructure was consistent with a functional nuclear site and suggested the project may have had similarities to North Korean designs.

During inspections in August 2026, IAEA teams recovered approximately 73 tons of natural uranium metal and reactor fuel rods from undeclared locations. These materials are now under IAEA safeguards and remote monitoring. Grossi emphasized that the previous government had engaged in clandestine activities to hide these facilities and materials from international oversight.
