IAEA General Conference opens in Vienna amid proliferation concerns

The 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has opened in Vienna, bringing together nearly 4,000 officials to discuss the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, including energy production, cancer care, food security, and nuclear safety.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a message warning of rising attacks on nuclear facilities and accelerating drivers of nuclear proliferation. On the sidelines of the assembly, Tanzanian Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi held talks with IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi and UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma. Discussions focused on expanding Tanzania’s cooperation with the IAEA into agriculture, food security, and the integration of nuclear energy into the national electricity mix.
