North Korea expands nuclear capacity with new Yongbyon enrichment facility
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that North Korea is expanding its nuclear infrastructure, including the construction of a second uranium enrichment facility at the Yongbyon nuclear complex. Based on satellite imagery and North Korean state media photographs, the agency identified a new two-story building that could accommodate up to 28 gas centrifuge cascades.
Additionally, the IAEA noted indications that an expanded annex at the Kangson uranium enrichment site, which was built in 2024, began operations in January 2026. These developments suggest a continuous effort by North Korea to increase its capacity for producing weapons-grade fissile material.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed serious concern, stating that these activities constitute a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Because the IAEA has been barred from North Korean soil since 2009, the agency relies on remote monitoring and open-source intelligence to track these developments.
