IAG partners with OpenAI to pilot voice AI for disaster claims
Australian insurer Insurance Australia Group (IAG) has entered a partnership with OpenAI to test the company’s agentic voice platform, OpenAI Presence. The collaboration aims to develop AI‑driven voice agents that can handle routine, non‑event‑related insurance claims over the phone, freeing human specialists to focus on more complex cases and speeding up response times during high‑volume natural‑peril events such as severe weather and floods.
Implementation is slated for the first half of IAG’s FY27 financial year (July‑December 2026). IAG’s retail chief executive Julie Batch said the initiative will provide faster, more consistent support for customers when they need it most, particularly during stressful disaster moments. OpenAI’s head of Go‑to‑Market for Australia and New Zealand, Satya Tammreddy, noted the partnership will help expand service coverage while reducing frontline operational burdens. The platform includes built‑in policies, guardrails and evaluation systems to keep the AI agents within defined boundaries and to hand off to human agents when necessary.
