CET Iași power plant explosion leaves thousands without heat

An explosion and subsequent fire at an electrical transformer within the CET Iași thermal power plant have left approximately 22,000 to 23,000 apartments, 138 public institutions, and 171 businesses without heating and hot water. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 17, caused significant damage to electrical circuits and power supply infrastructure.

Emergency response teams, including over 50 specialists from CET Iași and DelGaz Grid, are working to clear debris and assess the damage. Initial investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by a short circuit at the transformer. While the fire affected a smaller area than initially feared, the damage to the electrical supply remains a critical obstacle to restarting the plant.

Local authorities are coordinating temporary heating solutions for priority institutions, such as hospitals and schools. Hospitals have transitioned to using generators, while educational facilities are utilizing heat pumps or air conditioning units. Mayor Mihai Chirica stated that officials are evaluating whether the electrical shock damaged the plant's electric motors or thermoenergetic engines, with hopes to restore services within a few days.
