Iași hospital treats woman for severe eye infection from online contact lenses

A 20-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition at the Sf. Spiridon Emergency Clinical Hospital in Iași, Romania, after wearing colored contact lenses purchased online from Temu. The woman reported experiencing discomfort shortly after use and significant vision loss the following day.

Medical specialists, including Professor Camelia Bogdănici, head of the Ophthalmology Clinic, identified severe bacterial contamination involving gram-negative bacteria, specifically Acinetobacter and Klebsiella. These bacteria caused necrosis of the cornea's first layer. While the patient has regained her vision following antibiotic treatment, doctors noted that she still has corneal lesions.

Medical professionals are warning against purchasing contact lenses from unauthorized or unverified websites. They recommend that such products only be acquired through specialized medical offices, pharmacies, or certified optical shops to avoid risks of toxicity and severe infection.
