Ian Botham and Ben Stokes reignite dispute over Ashes

A verbal dispute has resurfaced between former England captain Lord Ian Botham and recently retired captain Ben Stokes regarding England’s performance during the Ashes series in Australia. The conflict stems from Botham’s criticism of the team’s lack of preparation, which led Stokes to previously label Botham and former captain Michael Vaughan as “has-beens.”

Botham, speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, expressed disapproval of the manner in which Stokes resigned from his captaincy during a Test match against New Zealand. He characterized the current state of affairs as “open warfare,” noting that while Stokes is a talented cricketer, he “let himself down” during the final months of his tenure. The English side suffered a 4-1 series defeat, compounded by off-field issues including breached curfews and late-night drinking.

Stokes defended his leadership and the team's approach, stating that while they may not have prepared in the specific way past generations did, significant thought and process had been invested over several years. He suggested that modern factors prevent the same preparation methods used by the “has-beens” of the past.
