Ian McKellen discusses life regrets and authenticity with Judi Dench
During an episode of ‘Tea with Judi Dench’, actor Sir Ian McKellen shared that one of his primary life regrets is not having come out to his father before his death. McKellen reflected on reading a letter from his father, Denis Murray McKellen, written for his 21st birthday, noting that while he knew he was gay at that age, he did not share his sexuality with his parents.
Mckellen, who publicly came out in 1988 during a debate regarding Section 28, discussed the importance of remembering the fight for established rights. Dame Judi Dench emphasized the importance of authenticity, stating that while people should not feel forced to declare their identity, nobody should feel they cannot intrinsically be themselves.
