LIV Golf faces restructuring amid bankruptcy and player exodus

LIV Golf is undergoing a major transition toward a proposed "LIV Golf 2.0" model as it navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The league is seeking a $300 million investment from private equity firm BC Partners to fund a restructured, team-focused circuit for 2027. While approximately 15 players have reportedly tentatively committed to the new era, the league faces a significant recruitment challenge to reach its target roster of 30 to 40 golfers.

High-profile departures have accelerated, with stars including Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter, and Louis Oosthuizen reportedly leaving the circuit. Additionally, the DP World Tour has announced that players who commit to LIV Golf will be barred from membership in its tour for the 2027 season.

Court documents filed in New Jersey reveal that LIV Golf paid approximately $15.6 million in retention bonuses to seven executives—including CEO Scott O’Neil, who received $6.375 million—shortly before filing for bankruptcy. These payments occurred while the league faced significant unpaid debts to vendors and players, who remain among the largest unsecured creditors.
