Ian Winship sets ‘world best’ 10k time at age 90
Ian Winship, a 90-year-old former paratrooper and steeplejack, is believed to have set a ‘world best’ time for his age category after completing a 10-kilometre race in one hour, four minutes, and 37 seconds.
Winship achieved the time at the Cumbernauld 10k run on September 13, participating alongside his daughter, Fiona Fleming, and grandson, Kyle Fleming. While Scottish Athletics noted the achievement is classified as a ‘world best’ rather than an official ‘world record’ due to the precision limitations of non-professional road running events, no faster times for the M90 category have been reported.
A veteran of the Suez Crisis, Winship attributes his physical condition to a daily regimen of long walks and the social companionship found through exercise.
