Health experts warn of cancer risks linked to lifestyle and diet

Medical experts and international health organizations are highlighting the significant links between lifestyle choices and cancer risks. Regarding breast cancer, research indicates that smoking increases the risk for women by approximately 10-25%. Additionally, experts note that the age of onset for breast cancer in Turkey and the surrounding region has declined to the 40-49 age range.

In response to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, various awareness campaigns and panels have been held in Cyprus and Turkey to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and regular screenings, such as mammograms. Medical professionals stress that while genetic factors play a role, environmental factors and lifestyle changes can prevent 90-95% of cases.

Separately, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is sufficient evidence of its carcinogenicity in humans. Consuming 50 grams of processed meat daily is associated with an 18% increase in colorectal cancer risk. Red meat is classified as Group 2A, with a daily increase of 100 grams linked to a 17% higher risk of colorectal cancer, potentially due to the presence of heme iron.
