IATA reports $4.1 trillion global economic contribution from aviation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that the global aviation ecosystem contributes $4.1 trillion to the world economy, supporting approximately 86.5 million jobs. The sector accounts for roughly 3.9% of global GDP. By 2026, the industry is expected to serve approximately 5.2 billion passengers and handle 71.6 million tons of air cargo.

To meet net-zero carbon emission goals by 2050, the industry requires an annual production of approximately 500 million tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Fleet renewal remains a critical tool for reducing emissions. New-generation aircraft offer improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions per block hour through advanced propulsion technology and optimized aerodynamics.

In narrow-body and regional aircraft, improvements in cabin optimization and fuselage segments can reduce emissions per seat by up to 21%. In wide-body aircraft, transitioning from four-engine to two-engine configurations can reduce emissions per seat by up to 16%. Replacing current-generation wide-body aircraft with new models can result in emission savings of 5% to 10% per flight.

Key challenges facing the sector include geopolitical developments, supply chain disruptions, delays in aircraft deliveries, and the necessity of scaling SAF production. The United States leads in national income contribution from aviation, providing $1.3 trillion.
