IATA World Safety and Operations Conference begins in Istanbul
The IATA World Safety and Operations Conference is currently being held in Istanbul, hosted by Turkish Airlines. The event, themed ‘Human-Centric Performance’, focuses on the role of human factors in maintaining safe and resilient aviation operations amidst technological shifts like AI and automation.
During the conference, IATA Global Safety Director Mark Searle noted that Turkey has become the world's 7th largest aviation market, having grown its international passenger traffic by approximately 70 percent over the last decade. Searle also highlighted improvements in aviation safety, noting that fatal accident rates have decreased from one per 3.5 million flights a decade ago to one per 5.6 million flights in 2025, though 394 fatalities were still recorded in 2025.
Turkish Airlines CEO Ahmet Olmuştur emphasized that safety is the fundamental basis for industry growth and called for increased cooperation between airlines, airports, and regulators to address evolving operational challenges.
