SK bioscience to develop Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine with US BARDA support

IAVI, in partnership with Hilleman Laboratories, SK bioscience, and IDT Biologika, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to advance a vaccine candidate against the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV).

The contract is valued at up to $99 million, with an initial confirmed award of $36 million. The funding will support clinical development, including Phase 1 trials, regulatory activities, and the establishment of manufacturing and supply chains to respond to outbreaks.

The project aims to develop a single-dose vaccine using the recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) platform. SK bioscience will manage vaccine scale-up and mass production, while its German subsidiary, IDT Biologika, will handle the fill-and-finish processes.

This initiative addresses the ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has recorded over 10,000 confirmed cases and 4,887 deaths as of October 25, 2026. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments for BDBV.
