Ibagué hit by heavy rains causing flooding and infrastructure damage
Heavy rainfall and strong winds struck Ibagué, Colombia, on Friday, October 2, 2026, causing widespread flooding, fallen trees, and power outages. Local authorities, including Governor Adriana Matiz and Mayor Johana Aranda, confirmed that no injuries were reported despite the significant infrastructure damage.
In the city center, the Teatro Tolima experienced a partial collapse of a gutter and roof damage, which forced the evacuation of attendees during a graduation ceremony. Other reported incidents include a structural fire in Coello caused by falling power lines, a fallen traffic light in Ibagué, and several trees falling on vehicles and roads, specifically on Carrera Quinta and near the Puente de La Cartagena.
Emergency services are currently conducting assessments to determine the full extent of the damage. The storm also caused mobility issues due to flooding and debris, including rocks being washed onto roads in the Las Ferias sector.
