Ibama orders revision of R$ 6.5 billion Porto Meridional project

Ibama has requested a revision of the Porto Meridional project in Arroio do Sal, a R$ 6.5 billion infrastructure venture. The environmental agency deemed the current Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) insufficient, citing inconsistencies in the organization and presentation of technical data.

A primary concern raised by Ibama involves the project's impact on coastal dynamics and beach zones. Simulations suggest significant alterations to the coastline, prompting the agency to demand a review of the current layout and an evaluation of alternative configurations to mitigate environmental damage. The companies responsible, AOS and DTA, must now present control measures and demonstrate both environmental and economic viability for these changes.

The regulatory hurdles face a project that represents a significant portion of planned private investment in Rio Grande do Sul. The consortium involved has stated it intends to comply with the additional information requested by the agency.
