Ibaraki beach rip current kills father, son rescued with injuries

A drowning accident occurred on July 26 at Takeikama Beach (武井釜海岸) in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture. A 56‑year‑old man, Yamazaki Hiroshi, his 11‑year‑old son and the son’s 55‑year‑old brother‑in‑law were swept offshore by a strong rip current.

Yamazaki was rescued by a disaster‑response helicopter but died after being taken to hospital. The son and the brother‑in‑law were rescued by nearby surfers and suffered only minor injuries to their feet. Police noted that the beach area includes an artificial peninsula called “Headland,” which can intensify rip currents, and are investigating the circumstances.

The incident highlights the danger of offshore currents in popular summer swimming spots and the need for safety measures at beaches with such structures.
