Iberdrola, BBVA, and Santander launch blockchain-managed loan
Iberdrola, BBVA, and Banco Santander have completed a 150 million euro syndicated loan managed entirely through blockchain technology. This marks the first real-world syndicated loan where the entire lifecycle—including formalization, disbursement, interest management, amortizations, and maturity—is administered via distributed ledger technology (DLT).
The digital infrastructure, developed by ioBuilders in collaboration with the banks, allows participants to share a single, synchronized, and immutable record. This system is designed to replace traditional reconciliation processes between independent databases, thereby improving traceability and reducing operational error risks. The platform also manages contractual events such as interest calculations, principal and commission payments, and the monitoring of financial covenants.
