Iberdrola CEO Ignacio Sánchez Galán receives Gold Medal at Cursos de La Granda
Iberdrola chief executive Ignacio Sánchez Galán was presented with the Gold Medal of the Cursos de La Granda during a ceremony in Avilés, Asturias. The medal was handed to him by Benigno Pendás, president of the Cursos and the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas, with a laudatio delivered by Fernando Becker and attendance from various institutional authorities.
The award recognises Galán’s professional trajectory, highlighting his leadership of Iberdrola since 2001. Under his direction the company became Europe’s largest electric utility and one of the two biggest worldwide by market capitalisation, exceeding €140 billion. Iberdrola now operates in dozens of countries and supplies electricity to about 100 million people.
During his speech Galán stressed the historic role of Asturias in Spain’s transformation from coal to clean‑energy development. He noted that Iberdrola’s purchases from Asturian suppliers have risen to €1.6 billion over the past five years and that the firm’s pioneering electrification projects are generating jobs and new economic opportunities. He also described the current moment as a historic opportunity for a new industrialisation based on electrification.
