Iberdrola denies link between donation and Lisbon municipal contracts

Iberdrola has categorically rejected any connection between a donation made to the Lisbon City Council and electricity supply contracts awarded by the municipality to the company. The denial follows reports from Sábado magazine suggesting a link between a donation of over 150,000 euros from the Iberdrola Spain Foundation in late 2023 and energy contracts totaling nearly 50 million euros awarded since 2022.

The company clarified that the entities involved are distinct: the donation was made by the Iberdrola Spain Foundation, a private non-profit with its own legal personality and management, while the contracts were awarded to Iberdrola Clientes Portugal. The donation was intended for a lighting project at the Paços do Concelho to enhance historical and cultural heritage through sustainable solutions.

Iberdrola expressed deep indignation regarding any questioning of its transparency and integrity. Reports indicate that since Carlos Moedas assumed the presidency of the Lisbon City Council, the company has received six contract awards totaling approximately 49.9 million euros, compared to a single award of roughly 2.7 million euros in 2020 under the previous administration.
