Iberian reservoirs provide diverse habitats for waterfowl

A study by researchers from the CSIC Doñana Biological Station indicates that reservoirs in the Iberian Peninsula are providing increasingly diverse habitats for waterfowl. While species richness in reservoirs has evolved similarly to natural lagoons, the functional diversity of the species using reservoirs has increased significantly over time.

This increase in functional diversity is driven by the arrival of species with distinct ecological characteristics, such as large piscivorous birds like the great cormorant and the great crested grebe, which utilize deep waters, as well as large wading birds including the white stork, black stork, and common spoonbill.
