Ibis releases ibisOffice open-source productivity suite

Ibis has announced the release of ibisOffice, an open-source office suite designed to view and edit Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), and PowerPoint (.pptx) documents. Developed entirely in Rust, the software utilizes GPU rendering to ensure smooth performance during scrolling, zooming, and sheet switching.

A primary goal of the project is high visual compatibility with Microsoft Office. The company conducted over 70,000 tests comparing pixel-level outputs to ensure that line wrapping, page breaks, table borders, and graph scales remain consistent with Microsoft's products. The suite also supports saving macro-enabled files (.docm, .xlsm, .pptm), though it does not execute the macros.

ibisOffice is available as a desktop application for Windows 11 (64-bit Intel/compatible) and macOS 11 (Apple Silicon), as well as a web-based version. The web version uses WebAssembly and WebGPU to operate entirely within the browser, ensuring that file contents are not transmitted to a server during local editing.

The software is released under a dual license of AGPL-3.0 and a commercial license, with the source code available on GitHub. Ibis plans to integrate these capabilities with its cloud storage service, ibisStorage, to allow for fast and accurate online file previews and editing.
