Ibis Steel Company announces US$750M Point Lisas plant revival

Ibis Steel Company, supported by US-based Pinnacle Steel and Vanadium Corporation, has announced a US$750 million plan to revive the former ArcelorMittal steel plant at Point Lisas in Trinidad and Tobago. The project is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs and process vanadium, a move US officials suggest will help secure critical mineral supplies outside of China.

Economists have expressed mixed views regarding the investment. While Professor Patrick Watson and Dr. Jamelia Harris acknowledge the potential for increased foreign exchange, stimulated economic activity, and employment, they have urged the government to scrutinize the fine print. Watson cautioned that the ultimate benefits depend on the specific arrangements and noted that such sophisticated industrial complexes are often not major generators of direct employment.

Baldath Maharaj, president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce, described the reopening as a ‘landmark moment’ for the domestic economy. He noted that the facility would likely drive demand for local engineering, logistics, and security services, while providing a boost to the non-oil export sector and easing foreign exchange pressures for small and medium-sized enterprises.
