Ibiza and Formentera launch pine processionary control campaign
The Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment has launched its third consecutive aerial treatment campaign to combat the pine processionary moth in Ibiza and Formentera. Scheduled for October and November, the operation will utilize airplanes and helicopters to treat approximately 15,000 hectares of forest, totaling 30,000 hectares of cumulative treatment through two passes.
The campaign focuses on heavily affected areas, particularly in the southern and northwestern regions of Ibiza, as well as Formentera. The total cost for the 2026 control measures is estimated at 2.76 million euros. Authorities emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring due to the insect's impact on forest masses and the health risks it poses to humans and animals, noting that the caterpillars' stinging hairs can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues.
