Ibiza and Formentera to ban boat rentals without nautical licenses

Starting in October, recreational boat rentals in Ibiza and Formentera will be restricted to individuals holding a valid nautical license. This new regulation, published in the BOE, aims to address safety and operational issues caused by unlicensed renters in the Pitiusas islands.

Luis Gascón Rius, the Maritime Captain of Ibiza and Formentera, stated that the practice of renting boats to those without qualifications will no longer be permitted. While the new rule changes how this lucrative activity is conducted, Gascón noted that authorities currently have no plans to increase sanctions for violations.

To operate legally, charters must comply with Merchant Marine standards, which include maintaining valid technical inspections (ITB) and necessary certifications. Additionally, charter operators are required to ensure that both the vessel and its passengers have proper insurance coverage.
