Ibiza and Palma airports face significant summer flight delays

Major airports in the Balearic Islands experienced significant punctuality issues during the summer of 2026. Ibiza Airport ranked as the third least punctual airport in Spain among those handling over 400 monthly flights, with an on-time rate of only 65.8% between June 1 and August 31.

Palma Airport faced even greater challenges, recording an on-time rate of just 53% during the same period. According to Eurocontrol, Palma was among the worst-performing major airports in Europe, with 7% of scheduled operations failing to take place.

The delays are linked to record-breaking air traffic levels. The Palma control center reached a historic daily traffic peak, contributing to broader issues within Spanish airspace. Eurocontrol noted that increased demand, combined with capacity and air traffic controller availability constraints, has made Spanish airspace a primary source of delays in the European network. In Spain, approximately 561,000 passengers may be eligible for compensation due to flight disruptions.
