Ibiza authorities arrest three for smuggling 22 migrants in stolen boat

Authorities in Ibiza have arrested three individuals for allegedly using a stolen recreational boat to smuggle 22 migrants toward Formentera. The vessel, equipped with a 250 CV motor, was reportedly stolen days earlier in the Talamanca area of Ibiza.

During the interception near the coast of Formentera, the primary suspect attempted to evade arrest by jumping into the sea. After being located and identified in Formentera, he was arrested for resisting authority and for his role in operating the vessel. Investigators noted that the use of high-powered sports boats is a strategy to reduce navigation time from North Africa, though it increases risks due to speed and overloading.

Two of the detainees have been placed in provisional prison following the operation, which involved coordination between the Guardia Civil, the National Police, and Salvamento Marítimo.
