Ibiza judicial cases stalled by forensic psychologist shortage

A shortage of forensic psychologists in Ibiza is stalling approximately one hundred judicial proceedings, many of which involve sexual violence and victims who are minors. The deficit within the Institute of Legal Medicine prevents the production of essential psychological reports required to advance cases that have sometimes been accumulated in courts for years.

Sources indicate that the difficulty in filling these positions stems from salaries that are insufficient to offset the high cost of living on the island. The permanent position has effectively been vacant since April 2025, following a period where an interim professional resigned voluntarily.

Relief is expected on October 1, when a substitute psychologist is scheduled to join the administration. This professional accepted the role due to a new insularity supplement of approximately 500 euros gross per month. Data from the Judiciary shows that sexual offenses in Ibiza and Formentera rose to 349 during the first quarter of 2026, compared to 287 during the same period in 2025.
