Ibiza proposes ban on new nightclub licenses

The Consell d’Eivissa, the local government body of Ibiza, has proposed a plan to stop issuing new licenses for nightclubs on the island. This initiative is part of the PIAT (Plan d'intervention dans les zones touristiques), a strategy aimed at regulating the island's tourist areas.

Mariano Juan, the vice-president of the council, stated during a July 26 meeting that the goal is to maintain the current scale of the nightlife sector rather than eliminate it. He noted that certain areas already have a sufficient number of venues and emphasized that the nightlife economy remains a vital component of Ibiza, providing thousands of jobs.

While most municipalities on the island have had restrictions on new nightclub licenses for approximately 15 years, San Josep has previously remained an exception. The new proposal aims to unify these regulations across the entire island. The move comes amid growing local concerns regarding overtourism, infrastructure pressure, and the sustainability of the current tourism model.
