IBM advances to DARPA's third phase of quantum benchmarking initiative

IBM has advanced to Stage C of the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI), a third-phase evaluation led by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This stage involves independent experts testing and measuring quantum hardware, technology, systems engineering, and architectures to determine the feasibility of building a fault-tolerant quantum computer. DARPA launched the QBI in 2024 with the goal of determining if an industrially useful fault-tolerant system can be developed by 2033.

IBM expects to deliver its first fault-tolerant quantum system by 2029. In a related development, Zapata Quantum has joined the IBM Quantum Network. Zapata aims to use IBM’s quantum computers to translate complex use cases into practical, mission-critical applications, building on previous collaborative research between the two companies.
