IBM unveils dual-architecture 2nm processor for Z and LinuxONE
At the Hot Chips 2026 conference, IBM announced its first dual-architecture mainframe processor, developed in collaboration with Arm. Designed for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, the chip allows enterprises to run Arm-native Linux environments alongside traditional z/OS and Linux on IBM Z workloads simultaneously on the same core.
Built on a 2-nanometer technology node, the processor features 11 high-performance cores capable of operating at speeds exceeding 5.7 GHz. The architecture avoids separate Arm and IBM cores; instead, each core can natively execute both instruction sets concurrently. This design aims to integrate the massive Arm software ecosystem—which includes over 22 million developers—directly into IBM’s highly secure and reliable enterprise infrastructure.
The chip also includes specialized hardware for modern enterprise needs, such as AI inference accelerators for real-time in-transaction fraud detection, a dedicated on-chip data processing unit (DPU) for I/O acceleration, and a large cache architecture to support demanding data-intensive operations.
